A classic map built from point data

MuseumsWikidataMooseum

68,901 museums, one dot each

Every museum on Wikidata that has coordinates: 68,901 of them in 224 countries. A museum is a point in the truest sense, one door you can walk through, so this is a map with nothing but points. Europe glows almost solid, the eastern United States and Japan follow, and the gaps say as much about who edits Wikidata as about where museums are.

How it's made

One SPARQL query to Wikidata: every item that is an instance of museum (Q33506) or any of its subclasses, with a coordinate on Earth. Each result is one dot, projected with Equal Earth. Made for Mooseum, where museums are the whole point.
